"Serving Alameda County Medical Center" March/April 2008

Dear Valued Donor,

Cherlyn SpencerSpring 2008 is here and with it brings us fresh opportunities to reach our next milestones in service to our ACMC patients.

This month, we are so honored to show off the video production that our healthcare partner Kaiser Permanente produced for us in December 2007. On March 27, we will premier the 2008 community outreach video entitled “Alameda County Medical Center ~ Your Partner in Health,” and recognize the producer and cast, Kaiser Permanente representatives, and our Campaign Leadership at this special screening. A special “Popcorn Night” premier at the Highland campus will take place on May 7 — so stay tuned for more details.

As we’re fast approaching the time for our Annual Gala “A Legacy of Caring,” we want you to please mark your calendar now for Saturday, June 7, 2008. If you have ever had an opportunity to attend, you know it’s a great time you don’t want to miss.

Last, but not at all the least of our activities to accomplish this year is our Community Phase Angiography Suite Acquisition. Prior to our video screening event, the Honorary and Campaign Leadership Volunteers will meet to initiate the Community Phase and receive a complete orientation on the campaign scope. The need for the new Angiography Suite (also known as a cardio-vascular interventional lab or a “cath lab” when utilized for coronary procedures) is one of the highest priorities for the ACMC. Our fundraising goal set for the campaign is $2.6 million!

As you can see, we are moving full speed ahead to provide funding that supports quality care for our ACMC patients. Again, we thank you for all of your support thus far this year. We feel confident that, with our Board of Directors and your support, we will succeed in meeting our goals.

Until next time, best regards,

Cherlyn L. Spencer, MSW
Executive Director

This year we’re bringing back the most popular “Hitsville USA” for the 18th Annual Gala entertainment. To top it off, the planning committee is excited to announce that KISS FM radio personality and the voice of the SF Giants, Renel Moon will be the Mistress of Ceremonies.

Our goal this year is to raise $200,000 to assist the Foundation in meeting its goals for the ACMC equipment and program priority needs, including the Angiography Suite acquisition, Cancer Services program, Chronic Disease Management initiatives (Adult Diabetes and Childhood Obesity), and the Youth Violence Prevention Program. Childhood Obesity Initiative

STRIVING FOR A HEALTHY COMMUNITY

The Childhood Obesity Initiative, identified as a high priority for Alameda County Medical Center, under the leadership of Dr. Robert Savio, Chief of Pediatrics, recently completed a planning grant for $50,000 provided by Kaiser Permanente. During the course of this program, we were able to research and identify our target population of children with BMI’s greater than 85%, as well as begin to initiate the use of educational tools that would further help in the prevention of obesity.

The planning grant included collaboration with Alameda County’s Public Health Department, which assisted us by developing a screening tool and resource guidelines. In an ongoing effort to educate and empower parents and children on the importance of creating healthy lifestyles, returning to the Highland’s Pediatric Clinic during the month of March and April will be the enchanting storytellers from the children’s picture book, Cousin Wash Presents: The Food Convention. The Food Convention is based on one of the original folktales of celebrated storytellers and Zora Neale Hurston Award winner Curtis N. Hall.

These free events are open to all children and their parents. The first 25 participants will receive a surprise gift. Following are the dates to meet Mr. Corn, Mr. Stringbean, and Mrs. Peanut:

Thursday, March 27, 3pm—4pm
Thursday, April 3, 3pm—4pm

We are on an exciting new path that will bring life-changing interventions to our patients and, in the long run, assist in the creation of a healthier county. Currently, we are seeking funds for Phase II of the project, which will provide a pilot project for children 2-18 years identified with BMI >85%.

PROGRAM PROFILE:

Youth Violence Prevention Program

Caught in the Crossfire: Intervening with Violently Injured Youth at Highland Hospital

Caught in the Crossfire (CiC) is a nationally recognized hospital-based peer intervention program of Youth ALIVE!, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing violence and generating youth leaders. The program matches youth ages 12-20 who are recovering from violent injuries with trained peer Intervention Specialists from similar communities.

Since the program first began operating at Highland Hospital in 1994, over 1,000 youth have been helped by the program. The program currently operates at Alameda County Medical Center/Highland Hospital in Oakland and County + USC Medical Center in East Los Angeles. The program goals are to prevent retaliatory violence, reduce violent injuries among youth, reduce youth involvement in the criminal justice system, provide positive peer role models, and promote alternatives to violence.

Caught in the Crossfire was established after a medical social worker at Highland Hospital in Oakland called Youth ALIVE! requesting support services for youth hospitalized for gunshot wounds.

Caught in the Crossfire is funded in part by the generous donors of the Alameda County Health Care Foundation. For additional program information, please see www.youthalive.org, call Youth ALIVE! at 510.594-2588 ext.300, or send email to mail@youthalive.org.
