MNP Presence at
Madam CJ Walker Luncheon
The
Model Neighborhood Program (MNP) was represented by Program Coordinator
Heather MacDonald at the 7th Annual Madam C.J. Walker Business Community
and Recognition Awards Luncheon, along with over 1000 other attendees,
on March 15, 2005, at the San Francisco Marriott Hotel. Many other
notables were in attendance, including current Mayor of San Francisco,
Gavin Newsom, and former San Francisco mayor, Willie Brown.
The luncheon, an event of The National Coalition of 100 Black Women,
Inc., Oakland Bay Area Chapter, celebrates the entreprenurial spirit
by way of community and business awards. The MNP was a recipient
of a grant from the coalition this year. The MNP tabled a booth
with a projection of the students at work and disseminated information
to the community of celebrators. The luncheon was an excellent opportunity
to network and to be inspired by the work of others.
The keynote speaker, Sheryl Lee Ralph, got everyone's attention
while reminiscing about her moments on screen with Denzel Washington
but especially with her hard-hitting advice to parents to talk to
their children about sex. Ms. Ralph is the founder of Diva Foundation
that fights against HIV/AIDS.
During the school year, over 100 eighth-grade students from Calvin
Simmons, Frick, and Elmhurst Middle Schools compete for openings
in the Model Neighborhood Health Career Training Internship Program.
Internships begin in September and run until June.
